Strathmore Leos and Mwamba RFC played to a 0-0 draw in the final of
the 21st Great Rift Valley Ten-A-side tournament at the Nakuru
Athletic Club on Sunday 4th April 2010.
The match played before a sizeable crowd in wet, slippery conditions
saw both sides approach this tie cautiously, each adopting a wait and
see approach to the tie.

Defending champions Strathmore would pile pressure on Mwamba but were
guilty of failing to turn possession into points on more than one
occasion. Mwamba too had their chances but were equally guilty of the
same offence that had earned Strath an indictment.

The first half saw Strath burst in life right from kick off, putting
Mwamba on the ropes but the black shirts somehow survived. Mwamba's
response was animated but lacking bite, they put Strath on the back
foot but just couldn't score.

Someone once said ,"The more things change, the more they stay the
same." Both sides changed their tactical approach but still the score
stayed 0-0. This was the picture of things right up to the final
whistle.

With darkness having now set in, representatives from both sides, with
advice from the tournament organizers resolved to have both sides
share the trophy for six months each…arguably the best decision under
the prevailing circumstances.

Speaking after the match, Strath coach Mitch Ocholla rued his side's
missed chances, saying poor finishing let his side down.
Strath made it to the final with a hard fought 14-5 win over hosts
Nakuru RFC. Seth Machoki and Maurice Mbai scored their tries with
Kenny Andola slotting home two conversions. Davis Yanga scored
Nakuru's only try.
Mwamba rallied from 0-5 to beat a young KCB side 7-5, booking their final berth.

Nivea for Men Quins beat Mean Machine 5-0, claiming the Great Rift Ten
A Side plate while Ugandan side Makerere Impis won the bowl. Kenya
College of Accountancy University beat Kitale RFC, fronted by
ex-Mwamba RFC player Ben Amboko, claiming the Great Rift Ten A Side
shield.

That was the 2010 Great Rift Ten A Side tournament. Action now shifts
to the Kenya Cup and Eric Shield semi final play offs taking place on
the weekend of 10th April 2010.
